The center for International Law supports teaching and research in a broad range of areas and works closely with new York city’s business, financial, and legal communities as well as its advisory board. this past year, the center hosted several cle events including a three-part series on the practice essentials of international litigation, and an event on how to launch and grow an international law practice. at the 2015 otto l. Walter lecture, Sharon cohen levin of the united States attorney’s office for the Southern district of new York spoke about challenges in seeking the return of stolen cultural heritage property and some recent successes. Professor Federico Fabbrini of tilburg law School in the netherlands presented a c.V. Starr lecture on fundamental rights in europe. other programs involved presentations on immigration policy in early modern england, developments in world trade law presented by two judges from the u.S. court of International Trade, and an international law career panel organized in connection with the New York county lawyers’ association.
The center for new York city Law marked its 20th anniversary with an extraordinary event honoring the past 125 citylaw breakfasts. the celebration featured a panel of corporation counsels and the presentation of the Center’s new civic fame award. more than 270 guests attended. the 20th year was possibly its highest profile year yet, with its citylaw breakfast series featuring a number of prominent public officials, including u.S. attorney for the Southern district Preet Bharara speaking to an overflow crowd the day after the arrest of NewYork State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. other speakers included city council Speaker melissa mark-Viverito, taxi and limousine Chair meera Joshi, mTA Chairman Tom Prendergast, City Labor Commissioner robert Linn, and city Planning chair carl Weisbrod. the center also organized several highly attended cle events, including its annual Citywide Seminar on ethics, published the widely-subscribed CityLaw journal and online CityLand newsletter, and maintained CityAdmin, a free online research library comprised of 120,000 new York city administrative decisions from 28 city agencies.
The center for real estate Studies provides students an opportunity to study both the private practice and public regulation of real estate. its programs and curriculum reflect current concerns about ensuring environmental sustainability, creating affordable housing, preserving historical landmarks, safeguarding the financial stability of the residential and commercial mortgage markets, and assessing public costs and social justice issues arising from development. in the past year, the Center convened a number of events, including one in concert with the manhattan Chamber of commerce concerning “the State of development in manhattan: east Side looming” featuring a keynote speech by NewYork City Council member Daniel garodnick, and a panel of prominent real estate and business leaders. the center also held networking sessions and workshops to connect students to career opportunities in the real estate sector. in addition, the rooftops Project held its annual symposium geared toward executives, staff, and volunteers of not-for-profit organizations on issues related to real estate.
