Celebrating Our First 125 Years and Looking Ahead
As New York Law School launches its 125th Anniversary celebration, I am looking forward with great anticipation to the many remarkable events we have planned as part of the festivities. Throughout the 2015-16 academic year we will feature different aspects of NYLS’s rich history, focusing on our continuing tradition of innovation; our tremendous influence in law, business, and government, both locally and globally; and our impressive plans for the future.
This issue of New York Law School Magazine previews our numerous anniversary celebration events and engagement opportunities. This is an exciting time here at NYLS, and I hope you will join us in commemorating this magnificent milestone. You can get all the details at 125.nyls.edu.
As an illustration of how NYLS continues to innovate with the times and break the mold, we report on a unique co-location agreement with the New York City location of the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School. This will be the only co-located law school and business school in New York City, creating singular opportunities to harness the synergies that exist between the two institutions.
We also explore the special synergies we share with the borough right across the East River—NYLS ties with Brooklyn have run deep from the beginning. And then there’s our special relationship with that city across “the pond.” We strengthened our London summer program by adding a personal impact course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts through the generosity of Cynthia Senko Rosicki ’86.
While we’re celebrating, there’s another notable milestone in our history: the 20th Anniversary of the Center for New York City Law. That center, under the direction of Professor Ross Sandler, has brought an incredible amount of thought leadership and critical resources to New York City.
On a somber note, we honor the memory of Trustee Kathleen Grimm ’80, a beloved colleague and friend who worked tirelessly for NYLS for more than 30 years, and who dedicated her career to public service, most recently as Deputy Chancellor of Operations at the New York City Department of Education.
We also honor the creative output of an extraordinary faculty member and a notable alumnus. Professor Lloyd Bonfield is celebrating the 30th anniversary of a journal he co-founded, Continuity and Change. John Gallagher ’94 co- authored Black Ice, the autobiography of the first American-born black hockey player in the NHL.
As we celebrate our past accomplishments, we are always focusing on our promising future. Stay tuned for bold new developments as we continue to make great progress in implementing the Strategic Plan we released two years ago.
