david chang was named the inaugural Theodore Dwight 125th Anniversary Professor of Law, a newly-created professorship which honors the memory of theodore dwight, the central figure in the founding of nYlS in 1891. a member of the faculty since 1983, Professor chang emulates dwight in his spirited devotion to teaching, and is an award-winning expert in various areas of constitutional law, including interpretive theory, discrimination, freedom of speech, and hate crimes. his investiture will take place april 28, 2016.
Stephen J. ellmann was named the Martin Professor of Law, in memory of lester martin, an industrialist, financier, and noted philanthropist. a member of the faculty since 1992, Professor ellmann is an award-winning author on legal ethics and an expert in clinical legal education, constitutional law, and South african law. he also serves as director of the office of Clinical and experiential Learning, was instrumental in driving the recent expansion of clinical and experiential course offerings, and developed the nationally-recognized Clinical Year program which builds on the medical school model of learning. his investiture will take place november 23, 2015.
richard k. Sherwin was named the Wallace Stevens Professor of Law in recognition of his work on creative lawyering which integrates legal theory and practice into his courses. Professor Sherwin’s commitment to a pedagogy that strives to integrate legal theory and practice has been a touchstone of his career at NYLS, and his creative scholarship provides a brilliant example of bridging the gap between theory and practice. the professorship honors the memory of a great american poet and 1903 nYlS graduate, and acknowledges the arts and humanities as a force in the lives of so many nYlS lawyers. the investiture occurred in spring 2015.
nadine Strossen was named the John Marshall Harlan II Professor of Law honoring her leadership of the ACLU, constitutional law acumen, and her scholarship in free speech and privacy rights. Professor Strossen was the first woman to head the american civil liberties union and was twice named one of “the 100 most influential lawyers in america” by the National Law Journal. the professorship honors the memory of nYlS alumnus John marshall harlan ii (class of 1924), who served as an associate justice on the u.S. Supreme court for 16 years. her investiture will take place october 5, 2015.
