nYlS fulfills its commitment as “new York’s law school” by contributing to the vitality of New York City and beyond as a provider of quality legal education, new opportunities, and service to a broad community.
coMMUnITY enGaGeMenT
n in 2015, the charter high School for Law and Social Justice was launched, the result of a partnership with the college of Mount St. vincent developed by Professor richard d. Marsico. the School’s mission is to provide students in underserved communities with a high-quality education focused on creating pathways to college, graduate school, and careers in the legal profession.
n in november 2014, nYlS marked 20 years of South african constitutionalism with a groundbreaking symposium attracting a global audience of more than 200 to explore questions about law’s impact on contributing to a free society in South africa, and elsewhere. organized by Professor Stephen J. ellmann, the event included the honorable Patrick Gaspard, US Ambassador to South Africa and was funded by the ford foundation, the national Science foundation, atlantic Philanthropies, and individual donors.
n The Impact center for Public Interest Law and the center for new York city Law presented a public forum titled Tackling economic Inequality, which brought together top policymakers, advocates, and academics. the forum featured former Vermont governor howard dean as its keynote speaker, and panelists from the nYc mayor’s office, nYc agencies, nonprofit and advocacy organizations, the judiciary, and academic institutions. Several members of the nYlS faculty moderated the panels. topics considered included income and wealth, home and community, children and families, and administration of justice.
n in spring 2015, nYlS formed the Patient Safety Project, an initiative that will make important contributions to medical safety initiatives by collecting anonymous fact patterns from closed medical liability cases and organizing them in a searchable database that can be used to promote discussion among health care providers leading to better, safer medical treatment.
n in January 2015, nYlS brought together three prominent voices to speak about election reform in a panel discussion sponsored by davidoff hutcher & citron LLP. moderated by dean anthony w. crowell, the panel, entitled “election reform in the digital age” included robert bauer, Partner at Perkins coie, LLP, former co-chair of the Presidential Commission on election Administration, and former White house Counsel to President barak Obama; david becker, Director of election Initiatives at the Pew charitable Trusts; and Michael ryan ’95, executive director of the nYc Board of elections.
